Brookfield replaces an old house on the same site. Although the site is not on the river-bank, it is at river level so is subject to frequent flooding requiring the floor to be raised well above ground level.
The structure was built in glue-laminated timber frame, similar to Windrush and Marton and used western red cedar cladding over timber framed walls. The client’s brief lead to a curved “boomerang” shaped plan under a barrel-vaulted roof. The curves lead to some interesting challenges with curved double-glazed windows and a compound curve on the roof.
One of the main brief requirements was the creation of a two-storey living room with a gallery above to the bedrooms. This space is the dramatic highlight of the whole house and houses a very old olive tree around which the staircase curves.
